“Supporting older people in the Winchester community, seeking to improve quality of life and wellbeing by providing a helping hand.”
St John’s Hand in Hand is a planned social service in Winchester that seeks to assist older people through befriending and support, pointing people in the right direction in terms of services and social events that they can benefit from and enjoy. We believe that everybody should lead their life with enjoyment, friendship, fulfillment and choice. Sometimes in later life these things can become a little more difficult to achieve. Our Hand in Hand service is designed to help and is due to launch in early 2019.
Our aim is to make a real difference by improving the wellbeing of local residents and providing older people with new social opportunities. The service will also help people retain choice and control of their lives. There are three main elements to our proposed scheme:
- Signposting services – Our dedicated staff and volunteers will identify appropriate services and guide individuals to them. With the help of the community, we have created a database of services, activities and events in the Winchester area to support this.
- Living Well Plans – A plan that has the individual at the very centre, with their specific needs in mind. It involves us chatting with the people using our service about what they want to achieve and what support they need so we can agree a plan of action together. This allows us to gain a clear understanding of how we can help.
- Befriending – Offering companionship or acting as a friend to someone, especially in circumstances where help and support is needed. It will involve spending time with people using the service in ways that will make a real difference in their daily lives.
