Our almshouse community provides a friendly, welcoming and safe place where older people lead full and independent lives. People choose how to spend their time, with as much or as little support as they want and need.
A team of friendly St John’s staff provide support to residents. This includes the onsite charity administration office and maintenance team, who operate Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 4.30pm. Our almshouse welfare team (supported by a Registered Manager) are onsite 24/7 to respond to emergencies and to provide peace of mind. Residents can receive a call and at least one visit each week if desired.
There are many social activities organised; these are resident-led with little intervention from the charity other than providing premises, organisational support and encouragement.
There is a strong sense of family here. Many members of the St John’s Winchester community are good neighbours to each other and are actively involved in the outside community as volunteers and members of community organisations. For those who prefer to live more quietly and with less interaction with others, that is always respected.
We are rated as ‘good’ by our regulator, the Care Quality Commission. As a registered service we are required to display our last inspection ratings. You can download and read our latest CQC Inspection Report here. You can also read our guidelines for admission to the almshouses here.
