Almshouse Care Assistant
I have been working for St John’s for 32 years, since 1991. During this time, I have worked with some amazing people who have been very supportive to me through some difficult times and who have also taught me a lot. We have very good training here and are always encouraged to attend courses that are relevant to our job roles.
Working here for so long I have been lucky enough to know so many lovely residents. The best part is being able to help them remain independent for as long as possible. Being able to support them, whether just listening to their problems or helping to put on/off their stockings, always being sympathetic to their needs.
I always say a resident has had a life, so I enjoy listening to them or allowing them to show me photos of the past. You feel as if you are a part of their family as they enjoy asking about ours. I hope to be able to enjoy doing my role for years to come! And be in a team that is very friendly, supportive and there for each other.
I love working for St John's. The work is satisfying and rewarding, and the work conditions are fun. The Welfare team are a welcoming and professional group of people. In my role, I am able to support residents with personal and wellbeing issues which may impact their day to day lives. The great thing about being part of the Welfare team is everyone being open with new ideas, which could improve the service we provide, or ways we can support each other in the team.
Almshouse Care Assistant
I joined St John’s in December 2020 as a Business Administration Apprentice. Throughout my time as an Apprentice, I learnt a lot about the great work that St John’s does, as well how I could contribute my experiences and skills to support. Since passing my course with Distinction, I have taken on the role of St John’s Communications, PR and Marketing Officer. This role allows me to use my previous education as well as my natural creative flair to support the charity's activities, and I am really enjoying my role! St John’s is a great charity to work for - I appreciate the continuous support that I’m given, and the friendships that I’ve made.
Communications, PR and Marketing Officer
I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to be part of the St John’s community for many years. I have so many wonderful memories of my working days as a Care Assistant at Devenish House, working along-side some of the most amazing staff and residents. After the very emotional closure of Devenish and leaving the charity, I was given a life changing opportunity to further my career by working for St John’s Hand in Hand Service. Although a completely different role after working in direct care for 18 years, I am so happy I broadened my career path and returned to St John’s. I have not once looked back.
From my first day until now, I have learnt so much and I still continue to do so. I have incredible supportive colleagues, and I am very proud to be part of the team. During the past few years, we have truly shown compassion for one another, and we have become stronger together.
It’s a pleasure working for St John's and for our service which is a lifeline to so many isolated and lonely individuals. To make a positive impact to a person’s life is so rewarding, and I look forward to keep making a life changing difference. The service most definitely has a very bright future ahead, which I am looking forward to being a part of.
